- Cause and Correction of Steakhouse Syndrome

- QUESTION: I recently heard a story about a medical condition that has really
- made me curious. It was called "Steakhouse Disease" and it required surgery
- to "straighten out the eating tube" as treatment. I have never heard of
- anything like this, and can find nothing in my home medical book that has been
- so useful to me until now. Can you please fill in the gap?

- ANSWER: I too, could find nothing called "Steakhouse Disease" but did
- discover a condition known as "Steakhouse Syndrome" that may just fill the
- bill. It consists of a blockage of the esophagus (eating tube?) that occurs
- when the patient eats too rapidly, and fails to chew the food sufficiently.
- Since this is somewhat related to dining in steakhouses, the syndrome received
- its name in an article published in the Lahey Clinical Bulletin in 1963. In
- reality, the problem is caused by a fibrous ring of connective tissue that
- forms in the lower end of the esophagus, thus narrowing the opening. It can
- be seen on x-ray when the esophagus is fully distended by barium, and can be
- corrected by dilating this section of the esophagus surgically. Once the
- narrowing has been corrected, the prognosis is good. Sounds like this might
- be the story behind the story you heard.
